Cyclone Fani, one of the most severe storms to strike Odisha in recent years, caused widespread devastation in 2019. The cyclone’s aftermath resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of homes, and a crippling blow to livelihoods. The state faced immense challenges, with large areas left without electricity or telecommunications for extended periods. Survival became a dire struggle, particularly in the districts of Puri and Khurda.
Recognising the critical needs of affected communities, BREAD undertook a humanitarian initiative to support the lives most at risk. The organisation conducted a thorough assessment of the affected areas to determine the immediate and long-term needs of the people. Based on these findings, BREAD formulated a targeted strategy to provide effective rehabilitation and relief, seamlessly integrating its efforts into existing programmes for efficient implementation.
A new kitchen and dining hall were built at St. Joseph Community College, Jokiladi, to restore basic infrastructure and ensure the continued operation of the institution.
In Beatrix School, Puri, damaged solar panels and the roofing of the stage were repaired and reinstalled, facilitating the resumption of normal school activities.
Programme B: Mother’s Care (MC)
Educational supplies were distributed to students at Vinoba Bhave Telugu Medium School, Puri, helping them resume their studies and regain a sense of normalcy.
Through its initiatives, BREAD not only extended a lifeline to those impacted by the cyclone but also reaffirmed its mission to support sustainable development and uplift the disadvantaged sections of society.
