Covid-19 Emergency Response

Covid-19 Emergency Response

When the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic hit India in March 2020, it brought with it a nationwide lockdown that disrupted the lives of millions, particularly the underprivileged. Recognising the gravity of the situation, BREAD acted promptly to mitigate the challenges posed by the lockdown, initiating immediate relief efforts without waiting for restrictions to be lifted.

The first wave of the pandemic significantly impacted BREAD’s flagship project, Mary’s Meals, which provides daily meals to children at their places of education. With schools closed indefinitely, the organisation adapted its strategies to ensure that its support for vulnerable children and families continued uninterrupted. During the extended lockdown period, BREAD launched two key initiatives:

Under the Emergency Relief Distribution initiative, BREAD, with the steadfast support of its donors, provided essential ration kits to families struggling to survive the lockdown. These efforts spanned across three northern states of India—Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana—and successfully reached 44,914 families, offering them immediate relief during a time of immense uncertainty and hardship.

Simultaneously, BREAD collaborated with Mary’s Meals International to continue supporting 39,533 beneficiary children and their families. Through the Dry Ration Distribution programme, families received kits containing 10 kg of rice, 2 kg of lentils, and a bar of soap, ensuring both nutritional and hygiene needs were met. Each round of distribution offered much-needed sustenance for a period of 2–3 months, easing the burden on families who were disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

BREAD’s proactive and adaptive response during this challenging period demonstrated its unwavering commitment to supporting the most disadvantaged communities.
